The name of the city is undyingly connected to that of the Monk of Pietralcina, who with his prayers has renewed the message of faith, spreading it throughout the entire Catholic universe. Immersed in the green of the Gargano National Park and resting on the high-grounds of the hills behind Monte Calvo, the city of San Giovanni is embedded at the centre of a beautiful natural setting.Going back in time, to discover the origins of this town, we go back to year 1000.It was founded on the ruins of a preexisting IV century b.c. village, and of this village there are visible signs, like some tombs and a circular baptistry which in ancient times was destined to the Janus cult, and later on hallowed to San Giovanni.

The city endured its vicissitudes, until 1916 when the then very young Padre Pioarrived.; He dedicated his life to serve the Church, promoting the creation of Prayer Groups, and the initiation of charitable deeds, first amongst all the hospitals "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza", Padre Pio himself established "Tempio di Preghiera e di Scienza"(Temple of Prayer and Science). Inaugurated on May, 5th, 1956, since more than a decade the hospital, has been renamed Istituto di Ricovero e Cura(Admission and Treatment Centre) of a scientific nature and offers more than a thousand beds. The historical centre of San Giovanni, is partly separated from the city, for those who are used to visting it for the sacred places connected to Padre Pio worship.
