The small centre of Carpino rests on Pastromele, a slight hill, not far from the enchanting Umbra Forest . Its name derives from càrpani, tall trees that are popular in this area and its origins can be attributed to Emperor Frederick II, who allowed five-hundred deserters to settle in this area. The large presence of farmhouses and dukedoms made it possble for Carpino to erect a magnificent castle,of which some remains are still visible.

The economy is almost exclusively based on agriculture and on the production of superior-quality oil, for which the town has been renowned with the title of "Oil City". But the name of Carpino has transcended provincial bounderies thank to the success of is singers, perfoming music and songs associated with folk traditions of the past. In addition to the songs they perform tradtional dances like the famous Carpinese tarantella.
