Cagnano Varano è rests on the lake of the same name. Besides representing the main attraction of the centre the lake offers an attractive landscape for its luxuriant vegetation that stretches along the north shore, until reaching a narrow sandy strip of land that separates the lake â?? for about 11 km â?? from the waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Ideal for the more curious and nature-loving travellers, the Varano Lagoon is immersed in the Gargano National Parkwith all of its infinite fascination. A charm that has its roots not only in wild fauna and flora, but also in the Art Nouveau of some buildings that leave a remote affirmation of the last World War.

The town rests on a hill which, according to tradition,was the site of the ancient Italica city of Uria, also mentioned by Pliny and Strabo. It would be interesting to see what connection this centre of Uria has with those of the same name situated in the eastern regions. We know that during the Middle Ages the city was surrounded by walls but today there are few traces of that period. Over the centuries the centre was the feud of some families of which there is evidence in the Palazzo Baronale,an ancient Norman fortress renovated several times over the years.

The Foce of Capoiale and the Foce of Varano(harbors), opened recently, are two routes of access to the sea and avoid the stagnation of water which in the past was a cause of malaria. A base for submarines and hydroplanes during wartime, today the lake represents one of the main resources of the town. The economy in fact, is primarily based on fishing and tourism which is developing.
