Historical Centre

The historical centre keeps the features of an ancient maritime town, and it does not have buildings of high artistic value. The only aim of this ancient fishermen population was to defend themselves from the enemy, who came from the sea. Therefore, the houses are built one beside the other, and it seems like they overlap.

Church of the Crucifix

It was the first parish of the town. It was closed in 1679, after it was heavily damaged by an earthquake. There are 10 altars inside the church, and the first on the right is dedicated to the Nativity; the first on the left is located under a beautiful wooden statue of inestimable value, representing the Dead Christ. Even more, the two organs are very interesting: the "small one" was given by Don Michele Veneziani and the "big one" by the four fraternal orders.
 

Church of Saint Nicola

It was built in 1680 and consecrated in 1827 by Archibishop Eustachio Dentice, who placed the relics of the Saints Martyrs Cristoforo and Teodoro over the table of the High Altar.
The enormous and wonderful wooden statue of Saint Cristoforo, patron saint of the "lemons" town, given to the inhabitants by the abbot Giuseppe Spinelli in 1681, is deeply venerated.

Church of Saint Pietro and Paolo

This is the oldest urban church, now situated in the centre of the town. In ancient times it was part of a monastery, whose building is dated back to Saint Francis of Assisi. In fact, it is said that it was built when the Saint, between 1216 and 1221, went on a pilgrimage to the cave of Saint Michele, in Mount Sant�??Angelo. The cloisters, surrounded by houses, are still visible today in front of the main entrance. The enlargement of the church over the years is documented by evident stylistic differences.

 

Our Lady of Libera Sanctuary

Here the precious "painting of Our Lady " is venerated; and this has been a Marian Sanctuary for more than 30 years. The current structure of the temple, with three naves, was built in the first half of the XVIII century, because the rural chapel which kept the painting was not able to face the increasing devotion of the faithfuls. The architectural style is a flawless and pleasant Baroque. The organ, more than 300 years old, was installed as an act of devotion for Crisanto Iacullo. The high altar, made of polychrome marble, is dated back to 1873.

Rodi Garganico vmaintains a ’valuable agricultural history, as a result of careful agronomic choices, in accordance with the natural function of these lands: a fertile ecological niche where, along a stretch of 5 km, we pass from the prickly pear tree to the chestnut tree.

Here, where the predominance of the vegetable garden and the land over the bordering sea has never weakened, citrus plantations are called "gardens" and the small land owners, some time ago at the heart of a flourishing economy, still referred themselves "gardeners".

It is an earthly paradise where the citrus trees ripen during the whole year: they start in April/May with the oranges, whose collection continues until September; June is the time of the �?�limoncella�?� and during Christmas they collect the �?�duretta�?�. Lands are cultivated around sources, and are protected by small walls of calcareous stone or reed fences, preserving orange and lemon trees from cold winds and saltiness.

Every locality of theGargano has its traditions, and every recipe has its uniqueness, which makes it different from any other place and characterizes its typical features.

The traditional dishes of Rodi Garganico are:
Troccoli and stuffed cuttlefishes, snail soup, panecotto of Rodi, bucatini with �??squilla mantis�?�, spaghetti with clams, and mullets baked in foil.

The traditional local products are:
caciocavallo cheese, ricotta , olive oil, products preserved in oil. Olives and home-made bread.

By car:
From the North: Take the A-14 Highway Bologna/Taranto - Poggio Imperiale �?? exit at Rodi Garganico.
From the South: Take the A-14 Highway Taranto/Bologna �?? exit at Foggia, continue along the S.S.89 and at the crossroads go towards San Marco in Lamis, and continue towards Rodi Garganico.
From Naples: Take the A-16 Highway Napoli/Canosa di Puglia �?? exit at Candela, then take the S.S. 655 road to Foggia and the S.S.89 road, continuing until arriving at the Rodi Garganico exit.

By train:
From the S. Severo Train Station take the connection to Rodi Garganico; or from the Foggia Train Station as well as, from the main square, Sita Bus Line..

By plane:
From "Palese" airport of Bari and from "G. Lisa" airport of Foggia, you can use public or private transportation.
