Mattinata is found at the feet of Monte Sacro, in ancient times known as Monte Dodoneo, upon which an ancient temple resides. Cited by the great poet Orazio, today Mattinata is one of the most developed tourist beach areas along the coast, while maintaining a wild beauty, with beautiful beaches, some of which are only accessible by sea, the majestic sea caves, the white rocky coast and the two �??Faraglioni�?�, sea stacks, that guard Mergoli Bay or Faraglioni Bay.

Stretching across a plane of olive groves of the Carbonara valley, Mattinata, is the white city of the Gargano. Its origins go back to settlement of the Bronze Age. Over the centuries it became an important port stopover for the trade of wine and oil. Today, above all Mattinata attracts tourists with its enchanting landscapes.

Monte Saraceno
A few kilometres away from Mattinata, stretched out over the sea towards Manfredonia, we see Monte Saraceno. This locality, that shows signs of activity since the Bronze Age, houses a Necropolis-Sanctuary which gave fundamental proof of the knowledge of the Daunia civilization.

Abbey of Monte Sacro
Resting at the top of Monte Sacro, concealed by a thick spontaneous vegetation, we find the majestic and extraordinary ruins of an ancient Benedectine abbey, that was consecrated to the Holy Trinity.; Tradition tells that this sacred building was established around the V century. In the XII century, thanks to the increasing economic and cultural richness, the original monastic cell became a rich and powerful abbey. Going up on the mountain top, it is possible to admire a striking landscape, dominated by the olive growth of Mattinata.

Agnulli, Roman Villa
Near the port, in Agnulli, there are the remnants of a large Roman villa, built with an "opus reticulatum", in which large doliums for food preservation are buried. .

Sansone Pharmacy
Inside, there is the beautiful private collection of "Matteo Sansone", full of archeological findings.

Umbra Forest
40 km away from Mattinata, at an altitude of 800 metres, we find the Umbra Forest. It is difficult to describe the rare beauty of this wood, appearing like a paradise: beech, pine, maple, chestnut trees and many other species of plants extend straight up to the sky, and in some points the sun penetrates with difficulty, because the forest is very thick. Its various animal population of fawns, deers, foxes, hares, boars and every kind of bird, fill the forest�??s religious silence with thousands of sounds.
