The Grotto of Saint Michael
A few steps further on from the altar of Saint Francis a unique spectacle
of its kind is unfolded before our eyes: the grotto, with an irregular
rocky vault, which has received millions of pilgrims over the centuries
and the place where many sinners have found again forgiveness and peace.

| Next to the presbytery, the altar of Our Lady of Perpetual Help has
found a place. In the internal part of the grotto we can admire a series
of statues and low reliefs.
We also notice a stone statue of the 15th century of Saint Michael in a small grotto called the Pozzetto (Little well); next to the low relief of the Most Holy Trinity is Our Lady, called of Constantinople and finally a low relief representing Saint Matthew. Following the wall we find a gate that encloses a hollow of the grotto called the cave of stones. Continuing on our way we observe the royal throne and two altars with canopies: of the Crucifix and of Saint Peter. |
