It is the centre more loaded with history and tradition and owes its development to the end of the fifth century, when, according to the tradition, the Archangel Michael appeared in a cave. The Longobardiâ??s, who dominated southern Italy in that period, made it their national sanctuary. In short, it became renowned in all Christianity and a fixed destination, not only for the European pilgrams, but also for the crusaders departing for Jerusalem, for popes and sovereigns.

The Sanctuary is accessed by going down a long and wide flight of stairs. The doors at the entrance are in bronze and were made in Costantinopoli in 1076, on behalf of the nobleman Pantaleone of Amalfi. The altars and the images that adorn them, are carved into the very rock of the cave. Instead on the central alter, the beautiful white marbel statue of Andrea Sansovino towers over it and on the rectory, the episcopal chair is carved on stone from the XII century.
