Vico del Gargano boasts an enviable position for the beauty of its landscape, situatated on the northern part of the hinterland of the Gargano, wrapped in the greenery of the Umbra Forest and surrounded by orchards, olive groves, and vineyards. The town has very ancient origins and keeps, disseminated in its territory, archeological evidence of unestimated value. On Mount Tabor and towards Mount Pucci, in the heart of the forest, findings from the Iron Age and traces of a Paleochristian necropolis were unearthed.
During the Dark Ages the city was in a struggle between the Byzantines and the Saracens and suffered numerous raids and lootings. Following that, its resurgence was favoured by the Swabian emperor Frederick II. There is a number of proof of the cityâ??s architecture that have remained from this period: the castle, the walls with the guard towers and some small churches. The historical centre of the city is one of the most suggestive and fascinating of the Gargano, it is a real labyrinth of small streets and narrow alleys, of which the famous "vicolo del bacio" or Kissing Alley, which is overlooked by chracteristic houses and buildings.
